The re-election campaign committee of Gov. Pat McCrory made a formal request on Saturday asking the State Board of Elections to conduct an “expedited” hearing of issues regarding the possible mishandling of ballots in Durham County. Thomas Stark, the general counsel for the N.C. Republican Party, had filed protested the election in Durham County based on the late reporting of 90,000 ballots on election night.
The McCrory Committee said in its appeal that — at a minimum — if the state board orders a hand recount of the Durham ballots and the results are the same from the election night tally, then the campaign will “be prepared to withdraw” its request for a statewide recount, effectively conceding the election to Democratic Attorney General Roy Cooper.
