Inspired by the bravery and sacrifices of first responders on September 11, 2001, Asheville’s Workout Anytime hosted its Memorial Stair Climb this week. The event challenges participants to climb 2,071 steps — the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs — mirroring the height of the World Trade Center.

This year marks 24 years since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, when nearly 3,000 people lost their lives, including many first responders who rushed into the towers as part of the rescue effort.

“This is an annual event,” said the gym’s General Manager, Dan Williams. “We feel it’s a meaningful way to connect with the community on a subject that many people have deep emotional ties to.”

Firefighters Lead the Way

From Sept 11-13, firefighters will take center stage in a challenge that recreates the stair climbing portion of the 9/11 response. Those who complete the climb in full gear will receive a free t-shirt and a complimentary 12-month Premium membership to the gym.

“We’re recreating the stair climbing portion that the first responders faced on 9/11,” Dan explained.

He added that the gym has marked a special recognition point along the way.

“It takes about an hour, give or take, and on the 78th floor, we have a recognition point, as that was the highest level firefighters were able to reach in the World Trade Center.”

Several firefighters from the nearby fire departments have participated.

“It’s been an amazing event so far, with firefighters participating from the Town of Weaverville Fire Department and the City of Asheville Fire Department, as well as many of our gym members and staff,” Williams said.

A Community United in Tribute

Williams says the event generated enthusiasm among members.

“We have a really avid gym community. This challenge brings recognition to something we can all have common ground on – especially with the fire department and first responders and how they respond to tragedy every day,” he said.
