Bad for business? NC Chamber bemoans primary winners Morrow, Farley

North Carolina’s economy has been growing by leaps and bounds in recent years, earning it the moniker of “The Best State to do Business” two years in a row (2022 & 2023) by CNBC, among other accolades. But, with recent GOP primary election winners, Michelle Morrow for NC Superintendent of Public Instruction and Luke Farley for NC Commissioner of Labor, the North Carolina Chamber fears that the state’s crown may be tarnished if they and others win in the General Election.

Cooper, state appeal appointments lawsuit ruling upholding 5 of 7 targeted boards

Gov. Roy Cooper and lawyers representing state government’s executive branch are appealing a February court ruling upholding appointments to five of seven state boards Cooper targeted in a lawsuit. State legislative leaders also have appealed the ruling.

State Supreme Court blocks ruling on liability for Robeson deputy’s injuries

The state Supreme Court issued a temporary stay Monday in a case involving legal liability for a Robeson County deputy sheriff’s injuries during traffic work. The state Court of Appeals ruled in December that the sheriff’s office and a private state Department of Transportation contractor bore joint responsibility for the deputy’s injuries in 2019.

Three-judge panel rules in favor of Cooper in fight over new state elections board

A bipartisan three-judge panel has ruled in favor of Gov. Roy Cooper in his legal fight with legislative leaders over a new state elections board. The decision means the current five-member elections board with a 3-2 Democratic majority will remain in place.

CON court filing criticizes NC health regulators, Duke

A medical imaging company has filed paperwork in North Carolina’s highest court criticizing state regulators and Duke Health for their legal strategy in a certificate-of-need dispute. Duke and the state Department of Health and Human Services challenge the state Court of Appeals’ September 2023 decision to affirm a CON ruling favoring Pinnacle Health Services. Pinnacle needed the CON to operate a magnetic resonance imaging scanner in Wake Forest.

Apex, property owner wage sewer pipe fight at highest NC court

The town of Apex and property owner Beverly Rubin have filed their latest competing briefs in their state Supreme Court battle over a disputed sewer pipe. Prior court rulings dating back to 2016 from Judge Elaine O’Neal determined that the town installed the pipe illegally under Rubin’s property. Rubin wants the pipe moved. The town argues that she must settle for compensation instead.
