In a tight bid for re-election, North Carolina Congressman Don Davis, D-01, urged Americans to reject referring to individuals and communities as “garbage” following Republican pressure in North Carolina on Wednesday.
What first started as liberal outrage over a comedian who made an offensive joke about Puerto Rico being covered in garbage at a Trump rally at Madison Square Garden on Monday, escalated into an insult directed at nearly half the country when President Joe Biden referred to Trump supporters as outright “garbage” on Tuesday.
During a Wednesday Trump rally in North Carolina’s Congressional District 1, National Republican Committee Chair Rep. Richard Hudson, R-09, slammed Davis, the district’s current representative, for not condemning the president’s insult. Hudson called on all Democrats to condemn the smear, or else their silence will say everything voters need to know.
“I have a question. I wonder what Don Davis thinks about the president calling [Trump] garbage,” said Hudson. “Have you heard from him? Haven’t seen a statement. A lot of folks from the media here in the back. Have you asked Don Davis yet what he thinks about his president from his party calling these people garbage? You should ask that question. Do your job.”
The Davis campaign later responded to the calls by disavowing the “garbage” insults.
“We must lower the temperature on all fronts and reject referring to individuals or communities as ‘garbage,’” Davis said in a statement to the Carolina Journal. “Our campaign remains focused on uniting, and not dividing eastern North Carolina families and the American people.”
This tweet took 20 hours, press inquiries, and NRCC Chairman @RepHudsonNC and @LaurieBuckhout calling on Davis to respond.#NC01 deserves a representative who leads without it feeling like we’re pulling teeth https://t.co/blghxkW2rr

During the rally, Trump brought up the insult, arguing that his supporters and the country have been treated like garbage. He said the insult makes Hillary Clinton’s “deplorable” insult look like “baby stuff.”
“Speaking on a call for her campaign last night, Joe Biden finally said what he and Kamala really think of our supporters; He called them garbage, and they mean it,” said Trump. “Even though, without question, my supporters are far higher quality than crooked Joe or lyin’ Kamala… I call you the heart and soul of America. You’re the people that built America.”
Late on Wednesday, Trump pulled off yet another viral public relations hit when he put on a bright yellow reflective vest and rolled up to reporters in a Trump-branded garbage truck in honor of Biden and Harris. Vivek Ramaswamy, the former Republican presidential candidate, also took a ride in a garbage truck and worked the machine with an employee.
