  • “The top five states where residents’ votes will have the biggest impact in the 2024 election are all fiercely-contested battleground states: Nevada, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona and Wisconsin. If you live in one of these states, you could quite literally have the fate of the election in your hands," said analyst Chip Lugo.

When election season comes around, voters might, at one time or another, ask themselves if their vote really matters in the grand scheme of things. According to a new ranking from WalletHub, voters in North Carolina can rest assured that their votes are quite powerful, indeed.

Voters in the Tar Heel State ranked the second most powerful in the nation when it comes to influencing the presidential election. WalletHub analysts attribute the high influence to North Carolina’s swing state status and the prominent role of the Electoral College in choosing our Commander-in-Chief.

WalletHub compared the relative influence of voters in both the presidential and Senate races. To make the comparison, they calculated a Voter Power Score for each state and for each type of election, to weight the relative influence of voters in each state and contest.

“[I]t’s evident that not all votes hold the same weight,” stated Chip Lugo, a WalletHub analyst who worked on the ranking. “The top five states where residents’ votes will have the biggest impact in the 2024 election are all fiercely-contested battleground states: Nevada, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona and Wisconsin. If you live in one of these states, you could quite literally have the fate of the election in your hands.”

North Carolina voters are only outdone by voters in Nevada (1), and followed by powerful voters in Georgia (3), Arizona, (4), and Wisconsin (5).

The relative power of North Carolina in the 2024 presidential race is further evidenced by, not only the saturation of political ads across the state, but especially in the attention specifically paid to the Tar Heel State by candidates and campaigns.

Both candidates, their respective running mates, and surrogates have made North Carolina a regular rallying point during the campaign, with the pace of visits quickening as Election Day approaches.

Democrat Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz have made recent visits, along with surrogates like former president Bill Clinton.

Republican Donald Trump and running mate JD Vance have touched down in North Carolina multiple times in the last two weeks, with more visits planned in the coming days.

Early voting is currently underway in North Carolina, ongoing until Nov. 2. So far, more than 1.2 million North Carolinians have cast their (powerful) votes.
