Thirty counties in North Carolina will receive a total of $12 million from federal grants for repairs to homes of low-income owners.

The money will come from the Small Cities Community Development Block Grant Scattered Site Housing awards. The grants are distributed by the N.C. Department of Commerce’s Division of Community Assistance, a press release said.

Counties receiving money are: Alexander, Ashe, Bertie, Bladen, Camden, Caswell, Columbus, Currituck, Durham, Franklin, Gaston, Gates, Halifax, Harnett, Haywood, Henderson, Lee, Madison, Montgomery, Northampton, Onslow, Person, Polk, Rowan, Scotland, Surry, Transylvania, Warren, Wayne, and Yancey.

Scattered Site Grants enable local governments to address the most critical housing needs of families. Grants are made on a non-competitive basis with $400,000 available to each county every three years.

To become eligible for an award, county officials must submit a detailed Scattered Site Housing Distribution Plan describing how the funds will be used to meet low-income housing needs. These plans should include all interested municipalities in each county. Scattered Site Housing awards are contingent upon the approval of the county’s plan and the receipt of 2005 CDBG funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
