RALEIGH — The State Board of Elections has increased the maximum amount individuals can give to a candidate from $5,100 to $5,200.

The change comes as a result of broad election and campaign legislation passed in 2013. It instructs the state board to index the contribution limit based on the Consumer Price Index.

“The contribution limit is per election, with the primary and general being different elections,” said Patrick Gannon, a spokesman for the State Board of Elections.

Before 2014, the campaign contribution limit was set at $4,000. The 2013 law increased the maximum to $5,000 beginning in 2014. The amount was raised to $5,100 in 2015.

The law instructs the State Board of Elections to recalculate the limit every two years, with the amount being rounded to the nearest multiple of $100.
