Gov. Bev Perdue urged the incoming General Assembly to review 345 of the state’s 406 boards and commissions, Tuesday.

She says she wants the General Assembly to provide recommendationsto consolidate or eliminate redundant or ineffective boards. Presumptive Speaker of the House Thom Tillis said the legislative body will do such a review, but the top priority is the state’s budget. Perdue agrees balancing the anticipated $3.5 billion deficit is more important.

Perdue asked the General Assembly to complete its review by the end of the year, but Tillis said it could be finished sooner than that.
