Former Democratic state Sen. Fred Hobbs admitted making illegal campaign donations to Gov. Bev Perdue, former Gov. Mike Easley, former Lt. Gov. Dennis Wicker, and Senate President Pro Tem Marc Basnight.

In all, Hobbs admitted to donating $148,000 illegally. He is from Moore County, where the district attorney is conducting a criminal investigation of the donations. Hobbs runs an architecture firm.

Meanwhile, Perdue laid out a sweeping plan to make government more efficient and affordable. She warned government workers that there would be layoffs before the state’s next budget is finalized.
