Senate Plan Would Cut Corporate Taxes, Cap Incentives

RALEIGH — Senate Republicans are pushing bills to reduce the state corporate income tax rate from 5 percent this year to 3 percent in 2017, and restructure the manner in which corporate taxes are calculated. The intent behind the legislation is to make the state more business-friendly and better able to compete with its neighbors in job recruitment.

House Rule Could Prevent Last-Minute Committee Surprises

RALEIGH — The new rule says that updated versions of legislation to be considered in committee — in legislative jargon known as a proposed committee substitute, or PCS — must be transmitted to committee members and to the bill’s sponsor by 9 p.m. the night before a committee meeting. House Rules Committee Chairman David Lewis said the PCS also would be available electronically to members of the public.

VIDEO: N.C. Senate Leaders Unveil Tax, Incentive Plan

RALEIGH — N.C. Senate leaders are touting a new plan to lower corporate tax rates, use the so-called “single sales factor” for calculating corporate taxes, create a new targeted incentive for large-scale manufacturers, and tweak existing targeted incentive programs. Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger, R-Rockingham, led a Wednesday afternoon news conference unveiling the plan.

Democrats want federal court to address GOP challenge of 60,000 NC ballots

The North Carolina Democratic Party filed a lawsuit Friday to ensure challenges of 60,000 ballots in the state's latest election are addressed in federal court. Republicans filed the challenges with the State Board of Elections. The challenges could affect the outcome of the state Supreme Court race between Democrat Allison Riggs and Jefferson Griffin, along with a handful of state legislative contests.

Griffin asks Appeals Court to order decision on election protests by Tuesday

Republican North Carolina Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin is turning to North Carolina’s second-highest court for an order that would force state election officials to make a final decision about Griffin’s election protests Tuesday. The State Board of Elections had planned to hear oral arguments about the protests the following day, according to a document Griffin filed Friday with the state Court of Appeals.
