Incumbent Moffitt Faces Well-Funded Challenge From Turner in HD116

RALEIGH — Republican state Rep. Tim Moffitt should have all the benefits of incumbency, but challenger Brian Turner said he believes he has chipped away at Moffitt’s advantage as the race in House District 116 winds down. The most recent campaign finance reports from the State Board of Elections show a very close fundraising battle, with Moffitt and Turner each reporting slightly more than $500,000 raised.

Republican Incumbent Lee Gets ‘Running Start’ In Senate District 9

RALEIGH — State Sen. Thom Goolsby, R-New Hanover, chose not to seek a third term and resigned his seat early, he said at the time, to give his appointed successor Michael Lee “a running start” in August. Lee is ready to carry the baton for the Republican agenda. Senate District 9 has not been held by a Democrat since Julia Boseman decided not to seek a fourth term in 2010.

Incumbent Dollar Faces Rematch With Baker in House District 36

RALEIGH — Incumbent state House Rep. Nelson Dollar, R-Wake, faces a familiar challenger in this year's race for House District 36 — Raleigh Democrat Lisa Baker, who last ran against Dollar in 2012. Baker said public schools, the environment, and women’s issues rank high among the topics of particular interest to voters in her district. Meanwhile, Dollar said jobs continue to be the No. 1 issue in his bid for re-election.

Republicans filed the challenges with the State Board of Elections. Griffin asks Appeals Court to order decision on election protests by Tuesday

Republican North Carolina Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin is turning to North Carolina’s second-highest court for an order that would force state election officials to make a final decision about Griffin’s election protests Tuesday. The State Board of Elections had planned to hear oral arguments about the protests the following day, according to a document Griffin filed Friday with the state Court of Appeals.
