Top NC court to consider case of CMS police retirement benefits

The North Carolina Supreme Court will take up the case of retiree benefits for campus police in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The state Court of Appeals ruled in February that CMS must pay into a state retirement fund to cover those officers.

State Supreme Court sides with Philip Morris in fight over $8.7 million tax bill

The North Carolina Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Philip Morris in the tobacco company’s legal battle with the state Revenue Department over an $8.7 million tax bill. The decision Friday split the court, 5-2, along party lines. The dispute involved export tax credits Philip Morris claimed on tax returns dating back a decade.

Griffin asks Appeals Court to order decision on election protests by Tuesday

Republican North Carolina Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin is turning to North Carolina’s second-highest court for an order that would force state election officials to make a final decision about Griffin’s election protests Tuesday. The State Board of Elections had planned to hear oral arguments about the protests the following day, according to a document Griffin filed Friday with the state Court of Appeals.
