Leandro school funding dispute returns to state Supreme Court in February

The North Carolina Supreme Court has scheduled oral arguments for Feb. 22 in the latest round of a nearly 30-year-old education funding lawsuit. It’s commonly known as Leandro. The court voted 5-2 in October to take another look at the case, officially known as Hoke County Board of Education v. State. Justices will decide whether a trial court had “subject matter jurisdiction” to order hundreds of millions of dollars in new education spending.

Appeals Court will rehear cases involving school bus accidents and COVID meal delivery

The state Court of Appeals has granted rehearings in two cases involving school bus drivers who caused accidents while delivering meals during the COVID-19 pandemic. October rulings in both cases would have allowed the lawsuits to proceed to trial. A state Justice Department lawyer representing the Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Alexander County school boards asked the court in November to take another look at the legal issues involved.

NAACP, Common Cause target NC congressional, legislative election maps in federal suit

A new federal lawsuit targets all three of North Carolina’s new statewide election maps for unconstitutional racial gerrymandering. The North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP, left-of-center activist group Common Cause, and eight individual plaintiffs want federal courts to block those maps. The lawsuit arrived Tuesday morning, four days after candidate filing ended under the challenged maps.

Appeals Court rules Robeson sheriff, DOT contractor liable for deputy’s injuries

The North Carolina Court of Appeals has determined that both the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office and a private Department of Transportation contractor bear responsibility for a deputy’s injuries during traffic duty in 2019.

The North Carolina Democratic Party filed a lawsuit Friday to ensure challenges of 60,000 ballots in the state's latest election are addressed in federal court. Republicans filed the challenges with the State Board of Elections. The challenges could affect the outcome of the state Supreme Court race between Democrat Allison Riggs and Jefferson Griffin, along with a handful of state legislative contests.

Griffin asks Appeals Court to order decision on election protests by Tuesday

Republican North Carolina Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin is turning to North Carolina’s second-highest court for an order that would force state election officials to make a final decision about Griffin’s election protests Tuesday. The State Board of Elections had planned to hear oral arguments about the protests the following day, according to a document Griffin filed Friday with the state Court of Appeals.
