N.C. Senate passes Medicaid expansion 44-2

Expanding Medicaid in North Carolina passed a hurdle Wednesday afternoon as the N.C. Senate voted 44 to 2 to pass H.B. 149 Expanding Access to Healthcare. “What we are going to do is monumental,” said Sen. Mike Woodard, D-Durham. In addition to Medicaid expansion, the bill contains the partial repeal of some Certificate of Need or CON laws and the SAVE Act.

N.C. Parents’ Bill of Rights passes Senate

A Parents’ Bill of Rights passed the N.C. Senate on Wednesday, June 1, in a mostly party line vote after lawmakers clashed over what the bill would mean for families. Republican supporters say the measure, a proposed committee substitute for House Bill 755, is needed to protect children and ensure that parents have common-sense knowledge about what their kids are being taught in public schools. Democrats, on the other hand, claim the bill would create a discriminatory environment against LGBTQ youth.

Medical marijuana is one of two cannabis bills approved by NC lawmakers

A N.C. Senate committee passed a bill on Wednesday by voice vote that would legalizing the use of medical marijuana with more than 0.3% of THC, a Schedule 6 controlled substance under the N.C. Controlled Substances Act. Meantime, the full House voted Wednesday to remove hemp with less than 0.3% THC from the state’s controlled substance list.

Griffin asks Appeals Court to order decision on election protests by Tuesday

Republican North Carolina Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin is turning to North Carolina’s second-highest court for an order that would force state election officials to make a final decision about Griffin’s election protests Tuesday. The State Board of Elections had planned to hear oral arguments about the protests the following day, according to a document Griffin filed Friday with the state Court of Appeals.
