House bill would expand power of state agencies over water quality, penalties

A clash among business, environmental, and local interests erupted this week over a bill that addresses continued concern over drinking water in the Wilmington area. House Bill 1095, PFAS Pollution and Polluter Liability, seeks limits on the amount of PFAS chemicals allowed in water and levies penalties, even retroactively, on those who violate these limits.

Anti-Beasley TV ad pulled, but CJ citations remain unchallenged

At least two N.C. television stations have pulled a Republican campaign ad targeting Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Cheri Beasley. Beasley supporters complained the ad contained false statements, according to a CBS News report. The ad focused on three cases Beasley heard during her time as chief justice of the N.C. Supreme Court. Two of the three cases mentioned in the ad cite reporting from Carolina Journal. Only the third case, relying on a citation from a different media outlet, prompted the Beasley team’s complaint.

Senate Democrats propose gas tax rebate for those with a driver’s license

North Carolina Senate Democrats have filed a bill for what they call a $200 gas tax rebate. Only people with a valid driver's license would get the rebate. Senate Minority Leader Dan Blue, D-Wake, said they would not support permanently lowering income taxes for everyone. Instead, they call to use $1.3 billion or 20% out of the anticipated $4.2 billion of this year’s state surplus to pay for the rebates.

Democrats want federal court to address GOP challenge of 60,000 NC ballots

The North Carolina Democratic Party filed a lawsuit Friday to ensure challenges of 60,000 ballots in the state's latest election are addressed in federal court. Republicans filed the challenges with the State Board of Elections. The challenges could affect the outcome of the state Supreme Court race between Democrat Allison Riggs and Jefferson Griffin, along with a handful of state legislative contests.

Griffin asks Appeals Court to order decision on election protests by Tuesday

Republican North Carolina Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin is turning to North Carolina’s second-highest court for an order that would force state election officials to make a final decision about Griffin’s election protests Tuesday. The State Board of Elections had planned to hear oral arguments about the protests the following day, according to a document Griffin filed Friday with the state Court of Appeals.
