RALEIGH — Wednesday, Nov. 19 was my 9th wedding anniversary. Feeling rather celebratory — and having precious little time, given the need to tape two “N.C. Spin” shows for broadcast over the next two weekends — I have little interest in devoting this space to another mindless, right-wing screed about what the evil government is doing to you.

You already know they’re out to get you, anyway. Right?

It’s actually well past time to take care of a few housecleaning items here at Carolina Journal Online, your daily online guide to the news, analysis, and commentary you need to make sense of politics and public policy in North Carolina. First, if you’re a regular reader of Carolina Journal Online, you should also be a regular reader of Carolina Journal, the monthly newspaper. It’s full of articles, briefs, commentaries, book reviews, and other material — much of which is not available in electronic form at this website.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised to find that many CJ Online readers haven’t yet discovered the print version. We’ve seen a dramatic increase in readership here, with average daily visitors more than doubling in just the past five months. Please check out this information about CJ and click through to subscribe.

Another way you can interact with Carolina Journal is through our new weekly newsmagazine, “Carolina Journal Radio.” Broadcast on 16 radio stations across North Carolina, the program consists of a mix of interviews with CJ reporters and editors, public officials, guest speakers, and journalists who offer diverse and intriguing perspectives about the issues facing our state. You can find out more about the program here, including where it is currently broadcast. And don’t be discouraged if there isn’t yet an affiliate in your community, because we are just about to begin production of a monthly compilation of programs on CD that you can subscribe to. Just send us an email and we’ll let you know when and how this will occur.

Yet another service you should be receiving is Carolina Journal Weekly Report. This email newsletter is distributed each Friday and contains summaries of the week’s key stories, links to information resources and features you may have missed, and a rundown of the topics to be covered that weekend on “Carolina Journal Radio,” “N.C. Spin,” and “NBC-17 At Issue,” the Triangle-area discussion program co-hosted by Carolina Journal‘s Donna Martinez. Click here and check off the box to get CJ Weekly Report.

On that page you can also sign up for other programs and services of the John Locke Foundation, including the invitation list for our exciting series of luncheons and conferences. We have an event somewhere in North Carolina each week, and I feel sure that you’ll want to attend as much as you can. If you reside in the Triangle area, you’re welcome to attend our weekly Monday discussion club, called the Shaftesbury Society, where you can get a square meal and a good talk for $6. On roughly a monthly basis, you should also check out our Headliner series of luncheons, which attract politicians, policy analysts, journalists, and authors (former Reason magazine editor Virginia Postrel, who now writes books and a column for the New York Times, is our December speaker in Raleigh and Charlotte.)

Finally, as you go to sign up for these services, you’ll see an opportunity to make a tax-deductible contribution to the John Locke Foundation. Most of our publications are offered free of charge to readers, and our events and other programs are partially or substantially supported by the voluntary gifts of those who believe in what we are trying to accomplish in North Carolina. If you value our contribution to the public policy debate, please consider helping us continue it and enhance it.

We are honored to serve you. Thanks for reading.
