The U.S. Supreme Court will not block a lower court’s order for new congressional election maps for North Carolina.

An order released late Friday in the redistricting case McCrory, Gov. of NC, et al. v. Harris, David, et al. said, “The application for stay presented to The Chief Justice and by him referred to the Court is denied.”

State legislative leaders drew new maps this week while awaiting word from Chief Justice John Roberts and the nation’s highest court. A “stay” in the case would have allowed North Carolina to move forward with its ongoing congressional primary election.

With no stay in the case, new congressional districts will head to the three-judge panel in U.S. District Court that produced the original order.
