No. 645: Racial Hatred Drives Legislation to Reinstate a Draft

Stoking the fires of racial hatred and class warfare is not a wise thing to do. Mississippi’s Sen. Trent Lott found out the hard way. Liberals, on the other hand, continue to stir gasoline into the melting pot without arousing nary a whimper of objection.

No. 646: ABA Guilty of Creating Lawyer Gap

According to a recent study, the high cost of attending law school makes it hard for government agencies and “public interest” organizations to recruit good new lawyers. You may be inclined to laugh and say, “So what’s the problem?” but the study, From Paper Chase to Money Chase, inadvertently calls attention to the policy in most states of allowing the legal establishment to dictate the details of legal education.

No. 647: Civil Justice or Legal Lottery?

President Bush and Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina represent two contrasting sides of legal liability settlements. Candidate Bush gave bold views with specific goals during the campaign. Last week in Scranton, Pa., Bush renewed a call to cap "pain and suffering" awards at $250,000. Edwards said recently that the administration plans would benefit the insurance industry at the expense of patients injured by doctors. He and Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts and Patrick Leahy of Vermont want to shift the blame and impose "tougher regulation of insurance companies." They believe that victims have a right to unlimited access to compensation ? from presumed deep pockets.
