Our system of government, with its multiple layers and separate branches, its freedoms to speak and assemble, is designed not to produce consensus but to manage disagreement, to channel it to productive rather than destructive ends. For too many young people, these are unfamiliar truths. That’s on us.

Discretion can be a dangerous word in criminal justice

We should expect magistrates to be qualified and trained at the highest level. Specific and consistent standards for setting bail should also be established. Far too many people have been victimized by repeat offenders who were let back on the streets. It needs to stop.

Free speech, even for views we hate

If Kimmel's employers independently (or after hearing from viewers) decided that these comments crossed the line and that this was the final straw, fine. But the federal government leaned heavily on Disney, the owners of ABC, to cancel Kimmel's show. What else can we call this but government censorship?
