“The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show,” the official successor to “The Rush Limbaugh Show,” is carried on nearly 600 radio stations across the country. The uninitiated might wonder how it is that so many millions of Americans are captivated by a radio program about politics — a realm notorious for bare-knuckled partisanship, rancor, and general unpleasantness. What is it that compels so many of our compatriots to hike up their britches and wade into the fetid, serpent-infested swamp of politics every weekday by tuning in to “Clay and Buck”?
Newcomers will be pleasantly surprised by the levity and amusement of the program. Buck, for instance, is notoriously ignorant of professional sports, which gives Clay, a “man’s man” and devoted sports guy, limitless opportunities to ridicule his sidekick. But Clay made the mistake of revealing to the national audience that he played the flute in his high school band. Ever since, Buck has prompted listeners to envision a shirtless Clay Travis tooting his little instrument as a means of wooing the ladies. Sexton’s hilarious, spot-on impersonations of Trump, Fauci, and Bernie Sanders are frequent highlights of the program.
But make no mistake: “The Buckster” is no mere court jester. You will find no funny business in the pages of Sexton’s new (and thus far, only) book, “Manufacturing Delusion: How the Left Uses Brainwashing, Indoctrination, and Propaganda Against You.” In fact, when addressing the leftists and communists among us, Sexton is delightfully, unapologetically belligerent.
Here he is, skewering a popular fad in the nation’s public schools: “Is there any benefit to education or development that comes from, say, having a 40-year-old man in a sequined cocktail dress, fishnet stockings, and six-inch heels read a storybook to toddlers? Whenever anyone has had the courage to ask these questions, the substance is ignored, and the mob howls, ‘Bigot!’ The adults who dance in front of the kids — and the parents who bring their own children or cheer as part of the crowd — have become accessories to a menticide.”
“Menticide,” or, “the killing of the mind,” is an uncommon term, but we should be aware of it. Millions of Americans, like the aforementioned parents, have been victimized. If the totalitarian left, Sexton writes, “can make you look at a 230-pound, bearded, middle-aged man who has suddenly changed his name and wears dresses, and you proclaim on cue, ‘That’s a woman!’, they’ve successfully killed your mind. You are now a party to their lie, a victim of menticide.”
Menticide is only one of the eight dangerous and effective tactics Sexton explores. The other seven are conditioning, brainwashing, weaponized law, forced phobia, isolation, identity construction, and propaganda —the last of which is, unfortunately, a staple of the daily American diet. Sexton condemns the nonsense much of the media spoon-feeds the masses as “news”:
“Every time we’re told Trump is a fascist, men can have periods, crime is the fault of the victim, J6ers are insurrectionists, BLM rioters are heroes,… and every other insane statement that comes from modern progressives, we’re being fed propaganda.”
Regrettably, many of our neighbors have been indoctrinated by propaganda vomited by their favorite left-wing “news” sources, one of which, The New York Times, Sexton repeatedly (and rightly) bludgeons.
“Left-wing interest groups,” he writes, “pitch stories to left-wing reporters and editors who produce fantastical stories about the looming climate catastrophe brought on by the US’s fossil fuel industry, the systemic racism responsible for police shooting unarmed black men, or the epidemic of children killing themselves because their backward parents aren’t supportive enough of their gender fluidity.”
The daily bombardment of such rubbish takes a toll. Eventually, much of the population is duped: “We can see the results. Today, more than two-thirds of Americans are ‘somewhat or extremely anxious’ about climate, a clear majority believe racism is a major issue, and pediatric referrals to transgender clinics increased 504 percent between 2015 and 2018.”
Sexton reminds us that only 3% of the nation’s journalists are Republicans — a percentage dwarfed by those who identify as Democrats (36%).
“In reality,” he writes, “almost every journalist who does not openly identify as a Republican is effectively a Democrat (or a Communist).”
Ideological conformity ensures a consistent diet of leftist propaganda.
Those of us who are disciples of Edmund Burke and Russell Kirk — champions and guardians of “the Permanent Things” — will find particularly alarming Sexton’s reminder about Chairman Mao’s Cultural Revolution, during which “he destroyed Chinese identity by demanding a struggle against the ‘Four Olds’: old things, ideas, customs, and habits. He dispatched urban youths to root out — with violence, even against the elderly— anything bourgeois or traditional.” Mao would applaud modern activists of the left-wing variety.
“Manufacturing Delusion” is a deeply-researched, intellectually rigorous, yet readable volume that should occupy a prominent spot on the shelf of every American concerned about the future of our republic. The tactics utilized and perfected by the likes of Hitler, Stalin, and Mao are being deployed with great success here on our soil, against our fellow citizens, and patriots must resist.
