VIDEO: Proposed ABC Bill Would Give State More Control

RALEIGH - The bill being debated in a study committee of North Carolina's General Assembly would give the state more control over local Alcoholic Beverage Control boards. Earlier this year it was rumored that the state would privatize some or all of its ABC system. Privatization is unlikely under draft legislation. The study committee's findings are due May 12, when the legislative short session convenes. The committee's final meeting is today at 2.

RALEIGH - A study committee in North Carolina's General Assembly is debating whether to make any changes to the state's Alcoholic Beverage Control system. Polls indicate the public is divided over moving to a privatized system, but no organized interest groups are championing privatization. Other control states have studied whether to privatize their systems and found competitive distribution could actually provide more money to government coffers while still limiting the availability of liquor.
