As General Assembly overrides vetoes, Stein calls on legislators to instead pass budget

As the General Assembly reconvened in Raleigh Tuesday morning to consider overriding 14 of his vetoes, Democratic Gov. Josh Stein held a press conference, saying the legislature should be focused on passing a budget, not on the vetoes, which he said are a “distraction that divides us.”

NC’s 2023 Medicaid expansion was passed with the promise that it would pay for itself. Now that promise is in jeopardy. The time has come for the NC GA to uphold its own law, honor that safeguard, and begin an orderly rollback of expansion before it threatens the very foundation of the Medicaid program.

How the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ may reverse Medicaid expansion in NC

Questions about what could happen to the Medicaid program in North Carolina if President Donald Trump’s domestic policy bill, aka the “Big, Beautiful Bill,” passes in Congress intensified over the weekend after US Sen. Thom Tillis, R-NC, announced on Saturday that he would not support it because of proposed cuts to Medicaid funding that would affect North Carolinians and hospitals in the state.

Tillis will not seek re-election in 2026

Following this weekend's public condemnation from President Donald Trump, Sen. Thom Tillis, R-NC, released a statement Sunday saying he will not run for re-election in the 2026 midterms. "I look forward to having the pure freedom to call the balls and strikes as I see fit and representing the great people of North Carolina to the best of my ability," he said Sunday.
