RALEIGH — The Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission has completed its review of a Pentagon proposal to close or realign military facilities in the United States. While the commission rejected the Pentagon’s recommendations in some high-profile cases, the changes had little effect on North Carolina.
RALEIGH — The Pentagon has released more information on why it proposes to close or downsize a number of military bases, including Pope Air Force Base in Fayetteville. The document also hints at where the Navy and Marine Corps might base their fighter aircraft in the future.
RALEIGH — Under the Pentagon's base closure and realignment proposal released in May, Pope Air Force Base in Fayetteville would lose most of its flying operations and become essentially an extension of neighboring Ft. Bragg. The move would come despite the Air Force's own calculations that Pope is among the best bases, if not the best base, in the country for the aircraft based there. The Air Force currently bases two squadrons of C-130E transport planes and two squadrons of A-10 ground-attack aircraft at Pope. At the core of the BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) process is “military value,” how useful a base is.
Because of the objectivity of the BRAC process, state politicians' pep rallies for military bases fall on deaf ears.
