Core Curriculum A Mixed Bag for North Carolina Schools

RALEIGH — For a U.S. history or politics course to be counted, the course must have “enough breadth to give a broad sweep of American history and institutions. Narrow, niche courses do not count for the requirement, nor do courses that only focus on a particular state or region.”

All of the schools in the UNC system pay lip service to a general education program that is supposed to ensure that students graduate with a well-rounded, fundamental education in addition to their major courses. East Carolina University says it will “engender a broad liberal arts base” in its students.
