Congress Mulls Western Civ Bills

RALEIGH — Congress is considering legislation that would provide grants to colleges to promote programs in Western civilization and American history education as a way to improve educational quality in those subject areas. The Higher Education for Freedom Act was introduced in early June by Rep. Thomas E. Petri, R-Wis., and Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., with the purpose to sustain postsecondary education programs that deal with traditional American history, the American founding, and Western civilization.

Putting Western Civ Flap in Context

CHAPEL HILL — One of the main criticisms being leveled against a proposed Western civilization program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is that the program would possibly be funded by a conservative philanthropy. UNC-CH leaders approached the John W. Pope Foundation about funding the proposed program. If the foundation agrees, it could mean a $12 million donation for the school. Some leftist students and professors argue any donation from the Pope Foundation is tainted and should not be considered because the foundation also gives funding to groups that have criticized UNC-Chapel Hill.
