NC Conference of United Methodists may lose 1/3 of churches to new denomination

A split in the United Methodist Church, North Carolina’s second largest religious denomination, has seemed increasingly likely the last few years, and now at least 260 churches in the state's 779-church eastern conference, known as the N.C. Conference, have voted to disaffiliate or plan to next year.

I was once a National Conservatism skeptic, but the ideas are needed

I attended the third National Conservativism conference in Miami and was pleasantly surprised by what I heard. I went skeptical: “nationalism” left a bad taste in my mouth, and I was sure I would find rabid Donald Trump supporters, QAnon types, or people who despised those from other countries. None of my preconceptions were true....

Enjoy the sunrise

Enjoy the sunrise It’s 6:32 a.m. I am sitting on our concrete patio in the community of Bettie, Down East, in Carteret County, on a mottled aluminum bench facing directly east. The distinct odor of exposed mud flat and salt marsh permeates the air, indicating the tide has passed low and is now rising. I...

The madness of our ideological age

Julien Benda’s classic work, “Treason of the Intellectuals,” appeared on the scene in 1927 but now speaks presciently to those of us living a century later. Benda complained that intellectuals, theretofore neutral on issues of politics when speaking ex-cathedra, began favoring one side over the other and being led to embrace only those truths allowed by their...

Why fathers are so important

Father’s Day was this past Sunday. Many people spent time with their fathers or even post photos celebrating the men in their life on social media. Still, more than ever, there is an epidemic of children living without a solid fatherly influence. Today 1 in 4 children in America live without any kind of father...

The attack on free speech you haven’t heard about

In September of 2021, the Texas Legislature passed a law meant to reel in the social media giants’ monopoly of online opinion. The bill, known as H.B. 20, requires large tech companies to produce regular reports of removed content, create a complaint system, and disclose their content regulation procedures. It applies to companies whose users...

No common ground without Natural Law

It’s recently become clear that the common ground people of a variety of worldviews once stood on is crumbling beneath our feet. And without this mutual starting place, known as Natural Law, it’s not clear how we can have meaningful dialogue or come to agreements on how to live together.  Evidence for this can be...

A ‘Conservative Spring’ in 2022

The word “spring” is often tacked on to political moments when a repressive status quo crumbles and a new era of hope emerges. The “Springtime of Nations” in 1848 was one of the largest political shifts in history, as European nations rebelled against monarchy and other traditional institutions, which they replaced with flatter, more-democratic structures....

Double taxes for the unvaccinated and other outrageous stories

I’m up here at a conference in Washington D.C. and met somebody from Raleigh who is a fan of Carolina Journal and he told me he liked the outrageous stories segment. It’s nice to hear from readers and I try to pick out content that has a broad appeal. Here are a few stories that...

The leftist paradox

“When science dissolves its marriage with reality, truth, their child, is orphaned.” “Don’t you wonder where they all are?” This simple question was posed by Enrico Fermi during a lunch with fellow physicists in 1950 and has become a serious problem for modern science. The question has resonated like a stone thrown into a pond, but...

Entitlement is not just bad politics, but a sickness of the soul

Jussie Smollett’s release from jail mere days into his sentence for faking a hate crime reveals another example of entitlement culture run amok. It’s not just that Smollett likely got preferential treatment with his release because of his money and status, but that he never apologized or admitted any wrongdoing from his hoax. When held...
