The North Carolina Supreme Court has blocked a lower court ruling that would have allowed the Richmond County school board to continue pursuing $272,000 from state government. A judge originally ordered the state to pay the money a decade ago. The high court’s order Friday responded to a request from State Treasurer Brad Briner and Controller Nels Roseland.

Bipartisan NC Appeals Court panel rejected Griffin’s December election request

Three months after its decision, the North Carolina Court of Appeals has revealed the names of judges who ruled against colleague Jefferson Griffin in December during the early stages of his election dispute. Chief Judge Chris Dillon and Judges Tobias Hampson and April Wood issued a unanimous Dec. 10 order against Griffin. Dillon and Wood are Republicans. Hampson is a Democrat.

Split Appeals Court rejects TV reporter’s records request from 2023 Charlotte shooting

A split North Carolina Court of Appeals panel has rejected a Charlotte television reporter’s attempt to secure the names and addresses of private security guards involved in a fatal 2023 shooting. The court’s majority ruled that Allied Universal Security Service, or AUS, was not required to provide the information to WBTV investigative reporter Nick Ochsner.

Appeals Court revives lawsuit against Highway Patrol trooper who caused fatal crash

The North Carolina Court of Appeals will allow the mother of an East Carolina University student killed in a 2020 car crash to pursue a lawsuit against the State Highway Patrol trooper who caused the accident. The 2-1 Appeals Court decision Tuesday reversed a trial judge’s ruling  favoring Trooper Omar Romero Mendoza.
