Fuel Prices Endanger Some Air Routes

CHARLOTTE — The rapid rise in fuel prices has greatly increased costs for the airline industry, forcing fare increases and cuts in service. While airlines are hurting in general, it doesn’t follow that across-the-board cuts in flight are likely. Rather, certain types of routes and markets are more in danger of being eliminated than others.

Small Cities Feel Airline Trends

CHARLOTTE — Earlier this year, a regional airline affiliated with Delta Airlines began service to Kinston and Hickory. For the two communities, the new flights represented a payoff to long years of effort and hard work trying to lure an airline back to town. Delta's Hickory gambit failed, while service to Kinston is doing well.
