Amendment Would Let Defendants Waive Jury Trials

RALEIGH — Supporters of the amendment say it would enhance efficiency in the courts. They also note that in some cases involving complex issues, such as insider trading, a judge may be better suited than a jury to understand the facts of the dispute before the court. Even so, some criminal defense attorneys worry about protecting the rights of indigent defendants.
