RALEIGH — Republican Gary Pendleton believes the tax-cutting and program consolidation strategies he pursued while serving four terms as a Wake County Commissioner are a good template to follow as a state representative in House District 49. Hanchette was among those arrested during June Moral Monday protests organized by the state NAACP in opposition to the Republican-controlled General Assembly’s actions and favoring progressive politics instead.
RALEIGH — Republican Rep. Tom Murry's seat is considered to be in a swing district, and he is facing a seasoned politician in Democrat Gale Adcock, who is in her second term as mayor pro tem on Cary Town Council, serving on the board since 2007. Adcock is a 59-year-old nurse practitioner, and the chief health officer overseeing 13,000 employees at SAS Institute. Unaffilated voters outnumber Democrats and Republicans in the district.
RALEIGH — The North Carolina FreeEnterprise Foundation lists District 94 as strong Republican, with 48 percent of voters registered Republican compared to 29.7 percent Democrats. Republican Gov. Pat McCrory won 72.8 percent of the vote in 2012; GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney won 70.2 percent of the vote.
RALEIGH — District 80 covers the eastern portion of Davidson County, and is classified by the North Carolina FreeEnterprise Foundation as a strong Republican district with 49 percent of its voters registered Republican. Incumbent Rep. Roger Younts says he's more conservative than challenger Sam Watford, who says he's not as partisan as the legislative leadership.
RALEIGH — At the recent Rowan County GOP convention, incumbent state Rep. Harry Warren celebrated the accomplishments of the Republican-led legislature during his tenure. His challenger in the race for House District 77, three-term county commission chairman Chad Mitchell, said that's not enough. Mitchell's main area of contention is that Warren is too soft on immigration reform.
RALEIGH — The suburb-heavy Western Wake County district has the highest number of independent voters in the state — 36.6 percent of registered voters are unaffiliated. The rest of the registered voters are split fairly evenly among Democrats and Republicans. But less than a quarter of partisans have voted straight tickets in recent elections.
BURLINGTON — The race to fill the open seat in state House District 63 is being waged by a pair of veteran municipal officials, one viewed in some quarters as an establishment Republican, the other a Democrat with some conservative notions. The district had a Democratic lean before redistricting.
RALEIGH — Two men who call themselves conservatives are vying to represent House District 51, a district that spills roughly equally over the Lee and Harnett county lines. Democrat Bill Tatum says he's more conservative than some Republicans. Incumbent Rep. Mike Stone won a series of honors from right-leaning groups.
