Students at less affluent schools get a lot more financial support than the conventional wisdom would have you believe.
RALEIGH — On May 8, veteran Democratic House legislator Jim Crawford will learn whether he will pay a price for joining with Republicans to override Gov. Bev Perdue’s veto of the $19.7 billion state budget. Crawford, one of five House Democrats who did so, is seeking the Democratic nomination for the newly redrawn House District 2.
RALEIGH — Three Democrats are battling for the nomination for the 10th District seat in Congress, where the winner hopes to replace U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry, a four-term Republican they say isn’t adequately representing the needs and views of the district that sits in the southwestern part of the state.
RALEIGH — As of March 28, eight North Carolina counties and 10 municipalities were listed as principals in the North Carolina General Assembly Lobbying Directory. The local governments are sprinkled among more than 660 lobbyists and 700 principals registered to lobby on behalf of businesses, industries, and advocates for and against specific causes and issues.
RALEIGH — From fiscal years 2006-11, the federal government accepted more than $10 million in gifts from taxpayers to help pay for programs. An attempt last year to allow similar contributions to North Carolina government failed to get out of the legislature.
DURHAM — Durham City Attorney Patrick Baker told resident Dick Ford he knows of no legal prohibition that prevents the city from using its TV station to advocate for a county referendum, which will be decided Nov. 8.
HILLSBOROUGH — Opponents of the tax increase say fliers, ads, web page, and other materials being used by the county and funded by a $50,000 appropriation from commissioners cross the line from informing the public about the ballot item to advocating a “yes” vote on the tax hike.
DURHAM — Last year, 65 percent of mission donations came from individuals, churches, and businesses. Another 30 percent came from mission-operated thrift stores, and 3 percent was generated by Temps to the Rescue.
I expect to take care of myself and be held accountable for my actions. I want government to step in only to accomplish things I can’t reasonably be expected to handle on my own.
A desperate mood is taking hold in the country, and the Obama administration seems unwilling to take the steps necessary to allay those worries.
Legislators have spent too many years enabling our dependence on government to tackle every problem.
