Katrina lessons continue
A mission trip leads to unexpected discoveries about recovery work on the Gulf coast.
Last week, President Bush announced a massive education relief plan for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Of the $2.6 billion education package, $1.9 billion will go directly to school districts (except in Louisiana and Mississippi), including charter schools enrolling at least 10 displaced children.
The state ports at Morehead City and Wilmington are picking up business that was previously headed to New Orleans. But if there’s truly a long-run trend at play here, let private firms decide what to do next.
There's no disputing the fact that hurricane Katrina created a vortex of human suffering, spanning many miles and several states. While there was no way to prevent a natural disaster such as this, finger-pointing in the days following Katrina has occupied pundits and politicians alike.
