High Court Reverses Decision Cutting ‘Life’ Sentences For Some

RALEIGH — A majority of the justices decided that good time, gain time, and merit time credits can be applied to accelerate the date some inmates convicted of capital crimes are eligible for parole and other benefits, but they cannot be used to move up an inmate’s release date. The dissenters said this ruling violates the U.S. Constitution.
