Activists Fight Against Regional Landfill

RALEIGH — After spending more than two years approving plans to build a massive regional landfill, the Camden County Board of Commissioners faces stiff opposition from local citizens that could potentially lead to a rejection of the plan and a breach of contract with the landfill’s operator. By allowing garbage to be deposited in a rural part of northeastern North Carolina, Camden County could receive host fees estimated to be as high as $4 million a year, which is almost one-half of the county’s annual budget. But if some local citizens had their way, the landfill will not be allowed to operate.
