RALEIGH — Last April, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill appeared to the nation as an affront to freedom and civil society. Yet half a year later, Chapel Hill seems more like a shining beacon of free speech than a repressive state imposing an extreme version of political correctness.
CHAPEL HILL – UNC-Chapel Hill reported net assets for the 2004 fiscal year of $2.2 billion, an increase of $216 million, according to an audit recently released by State Auditor Les Merritt. That same audit also cited reporting violations at UNC-Chapel Hill regarding the institution’s noncompliance with the state’s daily deposit and reporting law. In spite of these minor auditing violations, the report states that the school’s financial position “remained solid.” “Management’s view is that the [u]niversity is well positioned to continue demonstrating excellence in teaching, discovery, and public service,” the audit states.
UNC-CH leftists are incensed about the decision to fund Coulter's speech. Why should they pay — through their student fees — to support Coulter, whose views they find odious? In other words, they're sounding like conservatives, who've been objecting to their being made to support leftist causes through student fees for years.
In a contest of crises, the floods of Floyd won out over the underfunding of UNC. Or so it would appear. Certainly the state faced a crisis in the hurricane's wake. But is the situation facing UNC right now a crisis?
