1. Use of the Carolina Journal Website and Services

You may use our website and services only for lawful purposes. You agree not to use our website or services in any way that could damage, disable, overburden, or impair our operations, or interfere with any other person’s use of the website or services. You agree not to attempt to gain unauthorized access to any portion of our systems, accounts, servers, or networks.

2. Intellectual Property

Unless otherwise indicated, the content on our website—including text, graphics, logos, videos, images, documents, podcasts, and other materials—is owned by or licensed to Carolina Journal and the John Locke Foundation and is protected by applicable intellectual property laws.

Content created by Carolina Journal may be republished free of charge under the terms set out in Section 3 (Republishing Carolina Journal Content). Content licensed to us from third parties—such as licensed images—is not covered by that permission and remains subject to the licensor’s terms.

You may view, download, or print content for personal, noncommercial use, provided that you do not remove any copyright, trademark, or other proprietary notices. Any other use requires prior written permission from Carolina Journal unless otherwise permitted by Section 3 or by law.

3. Republishing Carolina Journal Content

We want Carolina Journal’s work to reach the largest possible audience. You may republish Carolina Journal content—articles, opinion columns, podcasts, video, and original graphics—in print, on the web, or in a newsletter, free of charge, provided that you follow the conditions below.

Content eligible for republication. This permission applies to content created by Carolina Journal. It does not apply to content licensed to us from third parties, such as licensed images. If a photo, illustration, or other asset carries a credit to an outside source, you must obtain permission from that source separately or substitute your own.

Required attribution. Every republication must:

  1. Identify the work as originally published by Carolina Journal and credit the original author.
  2. Include a hyperlink back to the original article on carolinajournal.com.
  3. In web republications, include a <link rel="canonical"> tag pointing to the original Carolina Journal URL.
  4. Preserve any in-article credits, source notes, corrections, and disclosures.

Recommended credit line: “This article was originally published by Carolina Journal. Read the original here: [link].”

No substantive edits. You may make minor edits for style, grammar, or to conform to your publication’s house style, and you may shorten the work to fit space. You may not change the meaning, alter quotations, or remove material disclosures. If you shorten the work significantly, please note that it has been edited for length.

No resale or syndication. You may not sell republished content individually, sell advertising specifically against an individual republished item, place republished content behind a paywall, or syndicate it to other outlets. Standard advertising on the page or newsletter in which republished content appears is permitted.

No implied endorsement. You may not use Carolina Journal’s name, marks, or logos in a way that suggests Carolina Journal endorses your publication, product, organization, candidate, or cause.

Corrections and removal. If Carolina Journal issues a correction or retraction, we ask that you update or remove the republished content promptly. Carolina Journal reserves the right to revoke republication permission for any item or any republisher at any time.
