Policymakers Mull UNC Changes
RALEIGH — Two ideas under discussion in North Carolina would significantly affect the makeup of the undergraduate student body — and who would pay the cost of student education. The first is a bill before the state Senate to extend in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrants and other noncitizens. The second idea, to replace some in-state students with more out-of-state enrollees, was first proposed in UNC-CH’s newly released academic plan, now before the university’s trustees. It urges trustees to “Reassess the implications of the 18 percent cap on undergraduate out-of-state students.”
