Freed Hamas hostage from NC meets First Lady at White House
Hamas seized 251 hostages, including Keith and his wife, Aviva Siegel. Keith was a North Carolina expatriate living in Israel and grew up in Chapel Hill.
Tuesday, federal and state officials marked the second anniversary of Hamas’ deadly Oct. 7 attack on Israel that left 1,200 people dead and 251 taken hostage, issuing statements in remembrance of the tragedy.

Sens. Thom Tillis and Ted Budd, R-NC, along with 47 Republican Senate colleagues, recently sent a letter to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris calling to lift the administration's partial arms embargo against Israel. This follows their resolution in May condemning the Biden Administration for withholding aid to Israel.
Tuesday on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill, protesters broke through police barricades to lower the American flag in the main quad and fly the flag of Palestine instead. Interim Chancellor Lee Roberts then walked to the quad surrounded by law enforcement officers to put the American flag back up. Counter-protesters surrounded the flagpole and chanted "USA," thanking Roberts for his intervention.
Republican North Carolina U.S. Sen. Ted Budd gave an update Tuesday about the situation involving the hostages, including North Carolina native Keith Siegel, being held by Hamas in Gaza, during a phone call with the media.
On Wednesday, North Carolina Republican Sen. Ted Budd called for a halt to any humanitarian aid to Gaza until every American hostage, including those from North Carolina, are home safe.
The North Carolina State Democratic Party is under fire for a number of anti-Israel resolutions that were considered at their convention held in Durham on June 18.
