Wake’s Busing for Diversity Not Making the Grade

RALEIGH — In early 2000, the Wake County Board of Education adopted a school assignment policy based on family income, which the board says is necessary to improve the educational outcomes of economically disadvantaged students and balance schools across the district. But North Carolina end-of-grade test data show student achievement for economically disadvantaged students in Wake County has declined since income-based assignments were instituted.

Commissioner Blames Busing Foes For Wanting to Roll Back Diversity

RALEIGH — Parents who oppose reassignment and socioeconomic busing in Wake County want to “roll back diversity,” said county commissioner Stan Norwalk at a recent public forum in downtown Raleigh. But others who spoke at the forum said the current system is failing minority students.

Coalition to Sue Wake Schools

RALEIGH — After experiencing years of frustration trying to have the Wake County Board of Education address concerns over school reassignment and other policy issues, a coalition of concerned citizens has prepared a lawsuit to stop the board from expanding mandatory year-round conversions for 2007-2008.
