Is the glass half-full, or is it half-empty? Ask an overly ambitious politician, and the answer usually will be “half-empty.” Ask environmental activists, who wag the dog in today’s political power circles, and again, the answer will always be “half-empty,” or in many cases, “hopelessly empty.”

Lie Test Demanded for Berger

RALEIGH — U.S. Reps. Virginia Foxx and Patrick McHenry, both of North Carolina, joined 16 other legislators last week to ask U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to administer a lie detector test to a Clinton administration official who stole confidential government papers.

Bowles Named UNC President

CHAPEL HILL – Former Clinton Administration Chief of Staff and two-time U.S. Senate candidate Erskine Bowles was named Monday the 16th president of the University of North Carolina system. Bowles’ appointment will become effective Jan. 1, when he will then succeed current President Molly Broad, who announced in April her plans to retire at the end of the 2005-06 academic year or when a successor had been named.
