Almost one in every four women between the ages of 18 and 24 is a survivor of sexual assault.” No sources for this information are given — which is mildly surprising since it is published in the campus newspaper for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a UNC flagship university with a well-known school of journalism. It is not, however, unusual for any campus discussion of that particular subject.

Unless you have a gift for the absurd,you would be hard pressed to dream up a campus "Awareness Week" that hasn't already been soberly promulgated somewhere. Every week on a college campus is an opportunity to commemorate somebody's pet cause. What are these weeks for? As the name and any promotion will tell you, they are to "promote awareness" of the issue named in the week. Usually that's it -- just the enthymematic "to promote awareness" of the issue.
Chancellor Marye Anne Fox of North Carolina State University issued a statement on tolerance this week. Published in Technician, N.C. State's official student newspaper, Fox wrote that "Several students have told me about highly offensive, hurtful and disrespectful graffiti that appeared on the wall of our Free Expression Tunnel on Monday night." Three sentences later she wrote, "The offensive graffiti has been removed, and I have asked our Campus Police to investigate this incident."
Hours and services will be restored to D.H. Hill Library on the campus of North Carolina State University, school officials have announced. Public pressure, student activism, work between library officials and the provost's office, and the state legislature's joint conference committee budget report all contributed to a restoration of library services, which will be effective Oct. 16.
Administrators and professors at North Carolina State University have come to the support of embattled Prof. Philip Muñoz. Muñoz's Political Science 205 class on Law and Justice was the site of an alleged racial attack Feb. 19, when a white female student, angered by the heated comments made about America and its treatment of blacks by a black student, Najja Baptist, told Baptist "go back to Africa."
The Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina this week approved a systemwide, $1 increase in student fees to fund the UNC Association of Student Governments. The increase will raise the UNCASG's budget from $2,500 to $165,000 -- an increase of 6,600 percent.
A collection of black student interest groups at North Carolina State University has graded the university on the subjects of enrollment and graduation of black students and recruitment of black faculty. The African-American Student Advisory Council, not surprisingly, gave the university mostly failing grades. In essence, the groups gave N.C. State low marks because the university doesn't discriminate enough in the way they want it to.
