2016 Election Bound to Produce More Excitement
The 2016 presidential election campaign already has generated plenty of excitement. Veteran presidential campaign reporter John Gizzi expects more.
RALEIGH — As Republicans continue to portray DemocraticU.S. Sen. Kay Hagan as joined at the hip to an unpopular President Obama, and with congressional approval ratings cratering, the freshman senator’s best campaign strategy is to avoid national issues, political observers say. Some pundits consider Hagan among the most vulnerable Senate Democrats.
RALEIGH — Bedrock conservative principles such as limited government, support for the free market, and reducing taxes and regulations reverberate in the House District 82 Republican primary campaigns of appointed incumbent Larry Pittman and challenger Herbert Jay White.
RALEIGH — Republicans Jack Wall and Brian Brown will compete in the May 8 primary for the North Carolina House District 9 seat currently held by six-term Democrat Marian McLawhorn. The winner will face McLawhorn in November.
RALEIGH — Because no Democrat has filed in the district, the winner of the Republican primary May 8 will take the seat. Republicans have a decided advantage in voter registration in state Senate District 33.
RALEIGH — When Bill Faison decided to forgo running for re-election to the state House and run for governor, few would have predicted that his heavily Democratic district would provoke so much interest from Republicans. The GOP contenders think newly drawn district lines are cause for hope.
RALEIGH — With unemployment at 17.8 percent in Scotland County and averaging 13.3 percent in the district’s five counties, state Senate District 25 is awash in candidate promises to do something about education, work force training, and job creation.
RALEIGH — Barring prolonged federal intervention or an unfavorable ruling from a state court, the maps will be in place for the 2012 election. Analysts predict that will mean a Republican gain of between two to four seats in the congressional delegation.
RALEIGH — If you don’t buy into the notion that newer is better, or that modern ideas trump those steeped in tradition, you might appreciate the journal Modern Age. The editor of that internationally known publication is R.V. Young, professor of English at North Carolina State University. In a public presentation, Young described how “Liberal Learning Confronts the Composition Despots.” That title referred to the teaching of college-level English composition classes. Young discussed the topic with Mitch Kokai for Carolina Journal Radio.
RALEIGH — Many politicians promise to limit the time they’ll spend in office. Some follow through on those promises. Others decide they like the perks and privileges of elected office too much to give them up. The Alliance for Bonded Term Limits is designed to help politicians stick to their word. Founder and chairman John Skvarla discussed the alliance with Mitch Kokai for Carolina Journal Radio.
RALEIGH — North Wilkesboro town commissioner Jeffrey Elmore doesn’t think his Republican primary opponent Dan Soucek, director of Operation Christmas Child for Samaritan’s Purse, has what it takes to swim with the sharks in Raleigh.
GREENSBORO — A bill allowing municipalities with more than 50,000 residents to consider the option of taxpayer-funded elections will more than likely be considered in the North Carolina Senate in the upcoming short session.
