UNC, Duke settlement leads to 102-bed hospital in southern Durham County

A recent legal settlement between two of the Triangle’s major healthcare providers will lead to a new 102-bed hospital in southern Durham County by 2032. That’s according to a joint statement Friday from UNC Health and Duke Health.

Holiday staff shortages hit the service industry hard

The NCRLA compiled hiring data from Lightcast and Indeed and found that since the beginning of October, approximately 2,134 restaurant jobs have opened up in the Triangle area alone. This development may come as a surprise to some due to the state’s historically low unemployment rate of 3.4%.

Plaintiff seeks dismissal of NC Supreme Court appeal tackling TV ‘fair report privilege’

A man is dropping his NC Supreme Court appeal in a case challenging a Triangle television station’s reliance on the “fair report privilege.” A settlement in the case means the state’s highest court will not have to tackle the First Amendment issue. The case had been scheduled for oral arguments on Nov. 7.

Texas police, firefighters lose legal battle against Triangle-based biopharmaceutical firm

The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld a ruling against investors who took a Triangle-based biopharmaceutical company to court. The investors had accused company leaders of illegally misleading them about a corporate merger. Pension funds for police and firefighters in San Antonio and El Paso served as lead plaintiffs in the federal class-action lawsuit.
