While the death of longtime Associate Justice Antonin Scalia will have a long-term impact on the future of the U.S. Supreme Court, his absence had little short-term effect on decisions issued during the high court’s 2015-16 term.

That’s the assessment of Ilya Shapiro, editor-in-chief of the Cato Supreme Court Review. Shapiro says Scalia’s death likely changed the outcome of just one case during the court’s past year. Shapiro discussed that case, other key opinions from the Supreme Court, and the latest court trends during a lunchtime presentation Thursday to the Triangle Lawyers Chapter of the Federalist Society.
