McCrory Asks Obama To Stop Flow of Syrian Refugees

CHARLOTTE — Citing Friday's terrorist attacks in Paris, and saying his "primary duty as governor is to protect the citizens of North Carolina," Gov. Pat McCrory on Monday issued a formal request to President Obama, asking the federal government to end the relocation of refugees from Syria to the United States until McCrory and public safety officials can be assured that the refugees have been vetted sufficiently to ensure they pose no security threats to U.S. residents or institutions.

State Ending Battle With Alcoa?

RALEIGH — A nearly eight-year-long legal battle between the state of North Carolina and Alcoa Power Generating Inc. over four hydroelectric dams the company owns and operates on the Yadkin River may be coming to an end. The state last week issued a water quality permit to Alcoa, one of the final impediments preventing the company from receiving a new license from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

McFarlane Wins Third Term As Raleigh Mayor

RALEIGH — Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane cruised to a third term in Tuesday’s municipal elections, and Charlotte Democrats voted to end the brief tenure of appointed Mayor Dan Clodfelter in favor of former four-term Mecklenburg County commissioner Jennifer Roberts. Meantime, Raleigh voters embraced several city council candidates who favor tougher restrictions on growth.

Tillis Stuns Hagan, Joins New GOP Senate Majority

RALEIGH — In one of the most closely watched U.S. Senate contests nationally, Republican House Speaker Thom Tillis of Mecklenburg County knocked off incumbent Democrat Kay Hagan in a race capping a night that saw the GOP seize the majority in the upper chamber, unifying control of Congress. Unofficial results show Tillis winning 48.84 percent, Hagan 47.23 percent, and Libertarian Sean Haugh 3.74 percent.
