The North Carolina Court of Appeals has issued an order effectively blocking certification of the 2023 Pembroke mayor’s race. The Appeals Court will take up incumbent Mayor Greg Cummings’ lawsuit challenging election results that show him losing by 19 votes.

Federal judge denies temporary restraining order in NC Supreme Court ballot dispute

A federal judge has denied Republican candidate Jefferson Griffin’s request for a temporary restraining order in a dispute over more than 60,000 ballots cast in North Carolina’s state Supreme Court election. Griffin had sought the order to block the State Board of Elections from certifying Democrat Allison Riggs as the race’s winner.

Appeals Court grants stay in case involving trooper who found roadside drugs

The North Carolina Court of Appeals has issued a stay in a case pitting a fired state trooper against the agency responsible for law enforcement certification in North Carolina. The case stems from the trooper’s actions when he discovered a bag of drugs on the side of a highway in 2020.

Research continues to affirm what common sense dictates: namely, that the teacher is the single most important factor in determining student achievement. Clearly, what teachers bring to the classroom – by way of aptitude and training – matters a great deal. So evaluating schools of education and teaching requirements makes good sense, especially if we are serious about raising student performance.
