Senate Dems block Budd’s ‘Laken Riley Act’

On Thursday, Senate Democrats rejected a bill one day after it was introduced by Republican U.S. Sens. Ted Budd-NC and Katie Britt-AL, that was named for the 22-year-old University of Georgia nursing student who was brutally murdered by an illegal immigrant last month.

Bad for business? NC Chamber bemoans primary winners Morrow, Farley

North Carolina’s economy has been growing by leaps and bounds in recent years, earning it the moniker of “The Best State to do Business” two years in a row (2022 & 2023) by CNBC, among other accolades. But, with recent GOP primary election winners, Michelle Morrow for NC Superintendent of Public Instruction and Luke Farley for NC Commissioner of Labor, the North Carolina Chamber fears that the state’s crown may be tarnished if they and others win in the General Election.

Place your bets! Sports betting officially becomes legal in NC

It is official. Sports betting is now legal in North Carolina. Anyone 21 or older holding an account with a licensed operator can use their phone or electronic device to place sports wagers starting at noon. The first wagers will be made on mobile devices, as no operator has been approved for in-person wagering at this time.

Lessons for November in the school superintendent race

One the biggest upsets of this 2024 primary was the defeat of long-time educator and Republican Catherine Truitt, Superintendent of Public Instruction. She lost the Republican primary race by nearly five points to Michele Morrow, a homeschool instructor and conservative activist with a strong grassroots ground game. In hindsight, it shouldn't have been a surprise.
