Election staff will hand count some ballots Wednesday in accuracy checks of municipal contests

On Tuesday, voters cast ballots in the last of three municipal contests in the state's first elections with Voter ID requirements in place. On Wednesday, state elections staff will conduct statutorily required random accuracy checks.

State elections board notes challenges scheduling federal voter ID trial in 2024

The North Carolina State Board of Elections explained in a court filing this week why a February trial could prove difficult in a federal lawsuit challenging the state’s voter identification law. ID critics are seeking a February trial. A hearing on the ID opponents’ request is scheduled Nov. 21 in Winston-Salem.

Voter ID, tax cap amendments case heading to three-judge panel

A lawsuit challenging two 2018 amendments to the North Carolina Constitution is heading to a three-judge panel. One amendment places a photo voter identification requirement into the constitution. The other lowers an existing cap on state income tax rates. Wake County Superior Court Judge Graham Shirley issued the transfer order Wednesday. Republican state legislative leaders had requested the shift.
