RALEIGH – Republican legislators filed a bill Thursday to protect unborn children against violence and murder.

Rep. Dale Folwell, R-Forsyth, is the lead sponsor. He has filed the bill in the past, but it has never gotten a committee hearing. He says he’s confident it will pass this year.

The bill would add murder, manslaughter and assault charges against unborn children to the state’s criminal code. So, if someone kills a pregnant woman and her child dies as a result of the attack or accident, the person could also be charged for the unborn child’s death.
