RALEIGH – Republican leaders in the General Assembly are seeking to override Governor Perdue’s veto of bill protesting the federal health care law, while also beginning work on implementing it.

Perdue vetoed HB 2 this weekend. It would force North Carolina to join multistate lawsuits seeking to overturn President Obama’s signature health care reform law. Republicans in the House need to find four Democrats to join their caucus in voting to override that veto. The Senate has a veto proof majority.

At the same time, House Republicans are working on a bill to create health benefit exchanges mandated in the law. The seemingly contradictory activities are being done, because the law has a 2014 deadline to create the exchanges.

The constitutionality of the law will likely be decided by the Supreme Court.
